Colposcopy

A colposcopy is an examination that consists of seeing the inside of the vagina and the cervix.

Before the examination

What to bring

  • Sanitary napkins
  • An up-to-date list of the medications you are taking.
  • Your health insurance card.
  • Your hospital card (if you do not have one, we will make one for you).

No other preparation is needed for the examination.

Bleeding on the day of the examination 

  • If you have very light bleeding, you can have the examination.
  • If your bleeding is heavy, or in case of doubt, phone us, we'll assess the situation and possibly reschedule your appointment.

After the examination

Unless otherwise mentioned, this examination does not require an escort. 

How a colposcopy is performed

This examination allows for a more detailed search of abnormal lesions, on the surface as well as deeper to clarify the diagnosis. During the examination, don’t be surprised that vinegar will be used to allow the contrasts to be seen better.

Biopsy

During the examination, it is possible to conduct a biopsy. If so, the collected sample is sent to the hospital laboratory for analysis.

Length of the examination

The procedure lasts for about 5 minutes.
