Men's health and well-being

Welcome to the page dedicated to men!

Responding to the needs of men’s health and well-being is a concern for the CISSS des Laurentides. If you or one of your loved ones (spouse, brother, father, friend, etc.) is going through a difficult period, please consult this section.

After certain life events, it’s normal to experience some difficult moments. After one or multiple events, you may experience signs of psychological or physical distress, such as tension and stress characterized by anxiety or depression, irritability, a sense of worthlessness or social disengagement.

How to recognize the signs

Stress and anxiety

Are you feeling tense?

Are you feeling overwhelmed?
Stress can present differently, depending on the person.

For example, you may experience:

  • Difficulty sleeping,
  • Physical discomfort, headaches, muscular tension,
  • Lower energy or agitation,
  • Appetite loss or gain,
  • Irritability, aggressiveness, crying,
  • Increased drug or alcohol consumption,
  • Feelings of sadness, anger or powerlessness,
  • Difficulty concentrating.

Depression

Are you feeling very tired?

Are you feeling discouraged, at the end of your tether?

Depression can present differently, depending on the person. For example, you may:

  • Feel depressed,
  • Have difficulty concentrating,
  • Feel physical pain, fatigue or lack of energy,
  • Experience disrupted sleep and appetite,
  • Lose interest in daily activities (leisure, sports, work),
  • Increase your drug or alcohol consumption,
  • Withdraw socially, tend to isolate yourself or, to the contrary, engage in excessive social activity,
  • Experience suicidal thoughts, or plan or attempt suicide.

Distress and suicidal thoughts

Are you feeling powerless?

Are you feeling desperate?

Do you feel like life has lost its meaning?

  • Suicidal thoughts,
  • Planning or attempting suicide,
  • Feeling depressed,
  • Anxiety,
  • Accumulation of stress or greater difficulty dealing with it,
  • Feeling exhausted, empty, hopeless and worthless,
  • Self-destructive behaviours (e.g., high-risk physical activities, thrill-seeking),
  • Excessive drug or alcohol consumption,
  • Irritability,
  • Onset or increase of angry outbursts, sometimes coupled with aggressive behaviour (towards objects, yourself or loved ones).

What to do?

When we receive bad news, we can feel shocked, angry or numb. It’s normal to need a bit of time to deal with the shock.

However, if these signs and symptoms last for more than two weeks, are negatively affecting your daily life or are preventing you from functioning, consult the available tools and don’t hesitate to ask for help to prevent the situation from deteriorating.
