Abuse, mistreatment and well-treatment

Together in the fight against mistreatment and to promote well-treatment

Abuse is a single or repeated attitude, word or act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within a relationship with a person, community or institution where there is an expectation of trust, which, whether deliberately or not, causes harm or distress to an adult.

The different situations of abuse experienced by a vulnerable adult may be associated with one or more of the following seven types: psychological mistreatment, physical mistreatment, sexual mistreatment, material or financial mistreatment, institutional mistreatment, ageism and violation of rights. Well-treatment is a culture that inspires individual actions and group relationships within an institution. It aims to promote patients’ wellbeing, respect for their dignity, fulfillment, self-esteem, inclusion and personal security.
