Organ and tissue donation

Organ donation: Taking the time to reflect…and make the right decision

A member of the medical team talked to you about the possibility of organ donation.

Here is some information that could help you make the right decision.

  • In Québec, anyone can become an organ donor, regardless of age, state of health, sexual orientation or religion.
  • Medical examinations and blood tests must be performed to determine the eligibility of the organ donation before starting the donation procedure.
  • A clinical coordinator-advisor from Transplant Québec must complete a questionnaire according to your to availability.
  • The organ donation procedure takes between 48 and 72 hours as of the signing of the consent form.
  • Your loved one may need to be transferred to a transplant centre, depending on their condition. If you refuse, the procedure can be performed here, at the hospital.*
  • The organ removal is done in such a way as to allow for an open casket at the funeral home, if desired.
  • During the organ donation procedure, you can leave the hospital and rest.
  • If organ donation is impossible, tissue donation can be a viable option.Transplant Québec logo
