Audiology

The department offers diagnostic inpatient/outpatient services to people with hearing impairments, tinnitus, vertigo or other conditions. It also assesses children’s auditory function at birth and children with language or learning difficulties.

Why consult an audiologist?

  • Difficulty hearing or understanding, especially when there is surrounding noise;
  • Tinnitus;
  • Vertigo;
  • Language or learning difficulties at school;
  • To check for normal hearing in newborns.

Interventions

  • Recommend a hearing aid or assistive listening device, with user instructions;
  • Assess hearing aids to ensure they are working properly;
  • Teach behaviours that facilitate and improve communication in daily activities;
  • Determine if an application for compensation from the CNESST can be made if the hearing loss is job-related;
  • Assess tinnitus and help manage related difficulties;
  • Work with teachers and school staff to obtain all the necessary and applicable tools in a student’s learning environment (e.g., FM system for auditory processing disorders);
  • Assess and treat certain vestibular problems;
  • Screen for deafness at birth in order to rapidly provide care for newborns with hearing loss.
