Youth mental health services

Local youth mental health services are aimed at youth diagnosed with a mental illness or suspected of one by a recognized professional. The intervention consists of, among other things, an assessment of the child’s or adolescent’s and their family’s needs, agreement among them on actions to support the youth as well as to equip the family and loved ones so that they can provide the necessary daily support.

The specialized pediatric psychiatric services are dedicated to children or teenagers whose symptoms are more pronounced, who have acute problems or whose condition requires hospitalization. The youth’s doctor determines the need to make a referral to specialized services. This team’s role is to undertake a psychiatric assessment to make a more precise diagnosis, provide the appropriate treatment, make treatment recommendations, and ensure the continuity of services.

Specific youth mental health services

Specific services are for youth with moderate to severe symptoms of mental illness.

The mandate of this service is to provide psychosocial, psychological or rehabilitation services adapted to the youth’s needs, to provide support and accompaniment, especially for the learning of strategies that encourage recovery.

Treatment lasts between 15 and 20 meetings, depending on the mental health condition, overall ability to function, and the goals of the interdisciplinary intervention plan which are made through collaboration between the multidisciplinary team, the youth and the family.

Specialized youth mental health services

Pediatric psychiatry on-call service in the emergency room

The pediatric psychiatry consultation service is provided at the Saint-Jérôme hospital for youth experiencing mental health emergencies who come to one of our institution’s emergency rooms.

Child and adolescent psychiatric outpatient clinics

A youth referred to the outpatient clinic has symptoms related to mental illness that have a serious impact on their overall functioning, such as recurrent crises, atypical regression, functional breakdown, resistance to pharmacological treatment, psychotic symptoms, etc.

The mandate of this service is to carry out a pediatric psychiatric diagnostic assessment of the youth, and to provide the necessary interventions and psychotherapy, either by requesting complementary assessments from specialized services, or by requesting support from local or specific teams in order to meet the youth’s needs.

To do this, the youth mental health access point must receive a request from one of the referents below to meet the youth and direct them, if required, to the outpatient clinic. The possible referents are:

  • The attending physician.
  • The child and adolescent psychiatrist in a hospital emergency room.
  • The child and adolescent psychiatrist following a hospitalization.
